Our Team: Meet Michael our Project Lead
Learn: Can you convert digitized newspapers to METS/ALTO?

Hello friend of Veridian,

Meet our Project Lead Michael and learn about converting digitized newspapers to METS/ALTO.

Meet Michael, Veridian Project Lead
Michael has been the lead engineer for Veridian software since 2007 and has bucketloads of experience in the digital library technology industry.

The phrase: "I’d better check that with Michael" is regularly used around our office. We’re very fortunate to have someone with his depth of knowledge in our midst.

Michael ensures Veridian stays ahead of the curve and also manages some of our largest and most well regarded Veridian projects such as the National Library of New Zealand’s Papers Past collection.

We asked him some questions about his approach to software development, expert tips for digitization teams and what he might belt out at karaoke given the opportunity.

Can I convert my digitized newspapers to METS/ALTO?
A large number of different formats, standards, and workflows are still used by newspaper digitization projects. They include well-known formats like PDF, as well as formats modelled around the requirements of specific access/hosting software, like CONTENTdm or the PR XML format used by Olive Software.

If your digitized newspapers are to be used and shared across platforms and survive into the future it is important to choose the most appropriate standards and best practices. Since about 2007 quite clear standards and best practices for newspaper digitization have emerged, namely METS/ALTO XML and associated high-resolution images, as adopted by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) in North America, the IMPACT project in Europe, and many others.

If you are planning a newspaper digitization project we strongly encourage you to use METS/ALTO and the related standards and workflows. More information can be found in our knowledge base.

But, what if you've already digitized your newspapers to a different format? All is not lost!

In many cases we can help migrate existing collections from formats like PDF or PR XML to METS/ALTO. If you have an existing digitized newspaper collection and would like to discuss migrating to METS/ALTO please contact us.

Until next month, best wishes from the Veridian team - Stefan, Michael, Jeffrey, Andrew, Richard, Pei, Shane and Miriam.
