Veridian’s Diary: Low resolution image pre-generation now available for Veridian viewer News:Lawrenceville School launches its new digital publication collection
Hello friend of Veridian,
As experts in digital collections, we pride ourselves on helping libraries and cultural institutions make their important materials easily accessible, and working to provide an excellent user experience. On that note, this month we share an improvement we’ve made to Veridian’s image viewer, developing a hybrid approach that sits between image generation on demand and pre-generation. Plus, we’re excited to share a new collection launched on the Veridian platform for the Lawrenceville School.
Veridian’s Diary: Low resolution image pre-generation now available for Veridian viewer
While our clients and indeed any users of a Veridian digital collection will be familiar with the image viewer tool, you may not be acquainted with how our image
server works. Rather than follow the pre-generated image approach used by other platforms such as Olive/Ignite and CONTENTdm, the Veridian image server generates images on demand as users browse collections.
The advantages of this approach include the ability to display images in different dimensions, resolutions and formats, and ensure the displayed images are always up-to-date - even if the source documents are replaced. However, both pre-generation and image generation on demand have their own drawbacks, so for our latest Veridian improvement we’ve developed a hybrid approach for the Veridian viewer that sits between both methods, to move closer to a ‘best of both worlds’ situation.
Lawrenceville School launches its new digital publication collection
It’s always satisfying to see a new Veridian collection come to life, with a recent one being the Lawrenceville School’s digital publication collection. The New Jersey school’s site holds a wide range of titles from the Stephan Archives (John Stephan being a former student) including the school’s current newspaper, The Lawrence, and its predecessors.
The collection also includes the school’s alumni magazine, The Lawrentian, which is now published quarterly. In total, there are 3,780 issues that form the new collection, comprising 38,684 pages.
