Veridian’s Diary: Identifying the number of views
for specific titles in Google Analytics

Hello friend of Veridian,

For our October newsletter, we explore the data management processes of Papers Past, a website delivering content from the digitisation programme of the National Library of New Zealand (NLNZ). Then in our latest Veridian’s Diary entry, we take a look at how you can use Google Analytics to identify the number of views for specific titles in a collection.
Case study: A close look at Papers Past’s data management processes
Papers Past currently contains over 6.7 million 19th and 20th century New Zealand and Pacific newspapers. The Veridian team has been working with Papers Past since 2006, ingesting data into and customising their use of the Veridian digital collection software to help create Papers Past on the web.

However, this article isn't about Veridian as such; we’re focusing on Papers Past’s data management processes. We talked to Tracy Powell from the National Library about how they manage their newspaper data.

Papers Past contains a range of content including magazines and journals, parliamentary papers and letters and diaries. However, for this article we'll be concentrating on how the NLNZ digitization team manage their newspaper data.

Read on to get an overview of each step in their data management process, including their automated and manual data acceptance testing, and how and when they reprocess data. We also explain why we believe Papers Past has a high quality data management process.

Veridian’s Diary: Identifying the number of views for specific titles in Google Analytics
Google Analytics can be a useful tool to understand how your audience engages with your digital collection. Many Veridian client collections include a wide range of titles, and within Google Analytics you can identify the number of views for specific titles.

In this article, we discuss two methods that can be used to achieve this, one being more ad hoc and one more systematic.

Until next month, best wishes from the Veridian team
Stefan, Michael, Jeffrey, Andrew, Richard, Pei, Shane, Ryan and Wayne.
