In Focus: Global Press Archive powered by Veridian
Collection Update: Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection
Hello friend of Veridian,

To begin 2020, here's some big news for access to global news publications, and a new look for the IDNC.
Global Press Archive powered by Veridian
The East View Global Press Archive® (GPA) is an initiative of East View Information Services in conjunction with Stanford Libraries and the Hoover Institution Library & Archives. It makes available an unprecedented volume of global news publications in full-image and full-text format for scholarly use.

GPA promises to facilitate new digital humanities research and broaden the landscape of area studies covered by digital news archives. Over time, GPA will present thousands of global newspapers as searchable online archives, covering approximately 30 languages and 80 countries. Wherever possible, titles will be presented in their complete runs from the first issue, and most publications in the GPA will be available as comprehensive digital archives for the first time.

The Veridian platform helps form the foundation of the GPA user experience. With its robust browsing and searching capabilities, crowd-sourced text correction functionality, and ability to seamlessly integrate resources across multiple languages and scripts, the Veridian platform is an ideal solution for GPA’s unique collections.

IDNC - A new look for a new decade

The Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections (IDNC) started 2020 with a fresh new look and a stack of extra features.

This digital collection from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign includes 129 newspaper titles and more than 1.5 million pages. Beginning with an issue of the Sangamo Journal from 1831, researchers can dive into a diverse holding of newspapers spanning 180 years of Illinois state daily life and history.

The recent upgrade of the IDNC website has modernized its user interface design, so it now sits comfortably alongside the main University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign website. It is also fully responsive - making it easier than ever to search and enjoy this rich resource across multiple devices.

A range of new features have been added to the IDNC as William Schlaack of the University’s Preservation Services explains:

"Thanks to recent software updates provided by Veridian, the IDNC website now provides an updated look to support a variety of new and improved features. Veridian was amenable to the many feature requests we placed, ranging from an Illinois county browser on our home page, and giving users the ability to select how many search results they receive per page. In addition, the site is now more accessible for those who prefer browsing on their phone or tablet."

Until next month, best wishes from the Veridian team
Stefan, Michael, Jeffrey, Andrew, Richard, Pei, Shane, Miriam and Ryan.
