Veridian Feature Spotlight: Geographical Browsing

Hello friend of Veridian,

s month, hear from the Swiss National Library's Head of Digitization about his team's digital newspaper project using Veridian.

Case Study: Swiss National Library Digital Newspaper Collection
Florian Steffen is Head of the Digitization Department at the Swiss National Library. His team was looking to grow an already very large digital collection.

They chose Veridian as the new platform for this important newspaper archive. The project involved migrating the existing collection to our platform.

"We had some big projects in the pipeline which would double our page load within a few years, so it was a good time to move to another solution. We got improvements we didn’t even think of and wish for. The new system is very efficient. Searches with thousands of results are carried out within less than a second. Results are very quickly displayed and newspapers can be viewed very quickly."

Veridian Feature Spotlight: Geographical Browsing
When you explore a digital collection on the Veridian platform there are many ways to help pinpoint the information you need. Standard Veridian offers the ability to browse the newspaper issues by date and title, but we also offer the flexibility to customize the browsing capacity to allow geographical browsing by location:
For the Swiss National Library's huge archive of digitized Swiss press we added an interactive map.

Here patrons can search for publications within a selected canton (a member state of the Swiss Confederation). By using the “County Browser”, users can also limit their search results to one or more cantons as places of publication.

Virginia Chronicle

Using Google Maps, this collection offers a geographic breakdown of selected newspaper titles for the Virginia Digital Newspaper Program at the Library of Virginia.

So far the map has had 68,509 views, so it's certainly proving to be a useful browsing tool.

Digital Michigan Newspapers

Central Michigan University's digital newspaper archive can be browsed via a customized list of counties.

Patrons can select a county and quickly bring up a a list of newspapers which have been published there, alongside the date range of each publication. Very handy indeed!
